What Is a Peephole?

A peephole (also called a door viewer or eyehole) is a small optical device installed in a door, that lets you see who’s outside without opening the door. Peepholes come in standard glass lenses, wide-angle viewers, peephole cameras, and combination styles like a peephole with a knocker.

How Do Peepholes Work?

Peepholes use a small fisheye lens that bends light from outside to provide a wide-angle view from inside. For front doors with peepholes, this gives a clear image of visitors, packages, and activity directly in front of the door.

Can a Peephole Be Added to a Door?

Yes, we can install a peephole on most wood and metal doors. This applies to homes, condos, and apartments. We can also replace peepholes that are scratched or fogged.

How High Should a Peephole Be?

The standard height for a peephole is 4.5 to 5.5 feet (54–66 inches) from the bottom of the door. In multi-person households or accessibility situations, additional viewers can be installed lower.

Are Peepholes One Way?

Yes, traditional peepholes are one-way viewers, meaning people outside cannot see in. Some modern peepholes have cameras that record video or send live footage to a phone for added security.

How Much Does Peephole Installation Cost?

Peephole installation typically costs anywhere from $100–$200. The cost of exterior door peephole installation varies by door type (wood, fiberglass, metal), the type of peephole needed, and whether it’s a new install or replacement.
